Stuff and Nonsense.

I've been spitting bile and foaming at the mouth this week over the evils of the UK and USA fashion, beauty and cosmetics industries.

From that Tad Safran article, to the increasing quantity of media space given to the outrage that is vaginal cosmetic surgery, it seems that the arch-bastards of these insidious industries are embarking on a major offensive (and I mean that on every level) to make sure that women have their tiniest blemishes and imperfections highlighted, exaggerated and ridiculed with every turn of every page, and with every click of the remote control or mouse.

I'm not kidding about the surgery either - I've read two pieces this week alone; a brilliantly argued piece by the Guardian's Cath Elliott, followed by fellow blogger EmmaK's irreverent take on the subject. I defy you to read either with your legs uncrossed...

So, I've been wondering, just how dim and gullible do these so-called fashion and beauty gurus think women are? And then I opened today's Sunday Times Style Supplement, and I found this.

£460.

For a desperately trendy and exclusive Moncler coat.

That looks like a gigantic, shrink-wrapped turd.

Women of intellect and reason, please feel free to draw your own conclusions.

I don't even look at style anymore in coats...I just see if it will withstand a Nebraska winter...

I am old.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Nice to meet you.

I wouldn't buy that turd coat even if I had the money. I read another report recently which said that the selfish capitalist countries: UK, US, Australia etc have twice as much depression as the unselfish capitalist countries France, Germany etc. I think they defined it as the selfish ones is where the wealth does not trickle down and is very inequitably concentrated.

Actually I think that's true. With Big Brother etc everyone thinks they can be famous, that they deserve a wardrobe of designer clothes etc and its never going to happen...so they get v depressed.

Maria: Whilst I don't have the same issue with climate (we just have greyness and drizzle here), my rule of thumb goes, if I can still zip it up, it'll do...I too am getting old!

EmmaK: it really is a hideous object isn't it? I'm sure the designers were taking the piss. And I'm with you entirely on the Big Brother thing - not just celeb-maker reality TV, but marketing and ads for aspirational brands and luxury products constantly placed in TV programmes and magazines seen by people with really quite average income levels. When there's a gap between a person's expectations and their reality, it's not at all uncommon to find depression filling that gap. I'd have had a much happier twenties, if I'd only worked that one out 10 years ago!

Well I have read your post and all the linked articles plus Emma's post and comments.....phew...and I have only one question. Where on earth will it all stop? If some man doesn't like my hoochie then he can go screw himself and I mean that quite literally. Geez....why can't people just be happy that they have two arms, two legs and can walk in a straight line? For those who don't have those things, you have even more right to feel indignant at the self indulgence of these vain, rich bitches who I think are just bored.

Sorry Melissaria, I didn't mean to go off on a rant, really I didn't.

Gypsy: you are more than welcome, I love a good rant! And I heartily agree with every word. I just count my blessings that men of my generation were not brought up to expect or require Porn Star Barbie plastic perfection. I hope that it doesn't change too drastically - men like Tad Safran, well what can I say? Except that he doesn't seem to like women all that much, does he?

Well, I just have to say, I didn't like the look of Ted Safran much!

Melissaria said...

Hi Earthling - no, he does look a bit of a self-satisfied shit horn, doesn't he? I just hope he lives up to his own impossibly high standards of personal grooming and hygiene. Sack and Crack wax included.

Fat chance of his smelling better than he looks, but he's the kind of guy who'd buy a turd -in-clingfilm coat, that's for sure.

Ha ha, yes agreed...!

Without meaning to make light of the issues of the media leading the impressionable to conform to a body image....

There is a big part of me that thinks that anyone dumb enough to spend that sort of money on a coat deserves to look like a dumb sh1te on the outside too.

Likewise anyone having surgery on their genital area solely for vanity reasons is masking the wrong ugly tw8t.

Proof again - you just can't polish a turd. (although the coat does seem to indicate that someone has had a good go!)

Digitarry: well yes, but sadly, the evidence is starting to stack up that it's not just the dumb and silly who are suffering as a result of this nonsense.

There are various organisations and activist groups, mainly in the USA at the moment, who are starting to put together hard evidence that continual sexualistion, particularly of young women, is causing real psychological harm.

I generally try to keep my blog light-hearted, but these are big issues which genuinely concern me. Have a look at these sites if you're not convinced yet.

I'm yet to hear of a UK equivalent; if anyone knows of one, please let me know. Otherwise I will have to start my own!
